I had got myself into a bit of a 4 to 6pm rut with my trips to Recoleta Cemetery, so last week I decided to pay a morning visit. After all, they do say to vary your routine to stimulate your brain. I had forgotten how fascinating it is to see the cemetery alive with caretakers cleaning the tombs. The place is transformed into a giant outdoor hotel, complete with the occasional chambermaid-style cart. The air was streaked with the scent of furniture polish, feather dusters appeared at every turn and a stained glass panel was getting a good wash beneath an outdoor tap.
With fresh eyes, I discovered this sculpture towards the back of the cemetery, on a street I have scoured many a time. How can I have not noticed her before? She merges so effortlessly with the cherub-decorated exterior across the street, the back-to-front words spilling out of her prayerful hands as if she is sharing an incantation. Her lower part fades before me like a flickering movie reel, giving the illusion that she is quite possibly the Ghost of an angel.
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
Muy buenas Fotografias, felicitaciones
Gracias, Daniel. Cómo llegaste a mi blog? Muy bueno lo tuyo también.
gorgeous, i love the way everything is white in this photos. it’s like she’s coming out of smoke, or the clouds.
Oh, thank you, Aja. So glad you like her too. I agree, it looks as though she’s rising out of a fireplace (although it’s not a fireplace at all, but the reflected archway of a door). This one is interesting, as the angel is actually inside the tomb. My other ‘ghosts’ are statues outside, which are reflected so they look to be inside.
Dear Julie Anne
I saw your email in my inbox just a moment ago and a thought went through my mind: “I do hope that Julie-Anne takes some photos of angels if she sees them…” I have just read a book by someone who has travelled the world taking photos of angel statues and figures and I thought of you. So I open up your email and somehow click on the second link. Not the first one. And there is your beautiful Ghosted Angel.
Such a simple moment that has brought a tear to my eye. And made my day.
Thank you.
Caroline
Dear Caroline, no accident that you clicked on the second link first. I love hearing about moments such as this. So glad you found her beautiful – she took my breath away when I first stumbled upon her. And so pleased to know this synchronicity made your day. Do email me details of the book if you get a chance. Sending love
