Even I think it looks as if there’s been some hocus-pocusing to get this montage effect, but no. The building, the cross and the lifelike stained-glass boy converged in a moment, my camera the magnet. The top of the reflected mausoleum conjures up classical temples, and the window’s Greek key border presses the point. The cross is confident, splitting its way through the arch to other realms. Ancient, timeless, this is a Collage of the past.
Speaking of which, I have long been a fan of collage and have been known to dig out a pile of old magazines of an afternoon and get tearing and gluing. It’s liberating to let myself choose the images that draw me, without censoring – working quickly and making sure that my hands move faster than my brain. There is a bliss in being absorbed in the process, not knowing what the (often revealing) outcome will be.
Something similar happens when I meander around Recoleta Cemetery. I walk and search and capture what I see, allowing myself to be led. It’s like entering a different reality, in which all else disappears. There is just me and my camera and the tombs with their stories to tell. This is when the magic ensues.
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
This is the most magical photo, Julie-Anne, and I love your description of wandering the cemetery, waiting to be led. Exactly the way I hope to feel when I’m trying something creative! Keep taking these beautiful photos, they are so nourishing. Hxx
Helen, thank you so much. Yes, being led – I love that wonderful childlike feeling of doing without thinking. ‘Nourishing’ is a beautiful compliment.
Your eye captures so much beauty and magic, it´s your gift for the world! It´s amazing to be a witness of your path and vocational development and construction, your artist is shinning and i celebrate this!lots of love and congratulations! tot
Hello dear Tota, thank you for your beautiful comment. And I celebrate your work in encouraging people to find their path. It was you who planted the idea of allowing my artist to shine. For that – and your many other wise words – I am forever grateful.
