For a while now, I’ve been wondering how the people who commissioned the tombs of Recoleta Cemetery came to choose their windows, roofs and doors. I mean, how did it go? “I’ll have a Saint George and the dragon for the window and a double door with palm branches and poppy heads, please”? Or, “Do me a low-key entrance with a simple cross, but I’d like a bold Sacred Heart of Jesus stained-glass roof”? I imagine some were selected by the individual before they died, while others were the preference of loved ones. Surely the overall idea would have been to have a peaceful, protective presence watching over.
One Catholic friend suggested that a person might opt for the saint whose name they adopted at confirmation. Another explained, “If it’s for a baby or a child, you pick an angel or a Virgin, but not Jesus. I don’t know why.” Well, this is a start and I know that more answers will flow my way over the coming months.
In the meantime, here’s my Shepherd boy on the steps. Thank you, reflection, for making him look as though he’s having a rest in the street, hanging out with his sheep. Now here’s a window that I can see would be appealing.
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
This another exceptional image Julie-Anne!
It has such ethereal qualities with what I guess to be clouds reflected around the shepherd boy.
I keep wondering how many more images can you find there – but they just keep coming.
So glad you like my shepherd boy – thank you. He’s pretty special and reflects reliably, morning and afternoon.
I confess that I, too, have moments when I worry I’ll run out of material, but there are 4,870 tombs there (have just looked that up), so, even though my requirements are quite specific, that should keep me in reflections photos for a while yet.
oh i love this one sssooo much. he’s like a spirit boy living in the cemetery, peacefully, watching the world of the living go by.
Dearest Aja, I’m so glad you like him and that you see what I see. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for – to give life to the characters in the stained glass. I love it when they cooperate like that!
