The overwhelming late-morning sun deceives: day appears as night, colour masquerades as black and white, and the sky turns to rippling water. Even the cross is behind, not in front of me. This is my Cherub UFO. The domed stained glass roof is one of my favourites at Recoleta Cemetery, so I’m sure I’ll be showing it to you in other incarnations.
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
Illuminated heavenward glance..you are not alone…
I really like this image. The black and white with just a splash of blue gives it a real air of mystery. Your title is very effective because it caused me to look closely to find the cherub.
Oh my goodness girl – your work simply becomes more and more amazing! I love this ethereal blend of images.
Jacqueline, indeed. That shaft of light lets us know we are connected. And, like the cherubs supported in the air, we are held.
Bob, I almost took this photo off the blog, as it’s so bizarre and experimental, but it turns out it’s a bit of a winner! Interesting what you say about the title, as I realise now it’s not obvious here what’s in the window – I’m so used to seeing this by ‘normal’ daylight. I’ll post a blue sky version some time, so the cherubs will become clearer!
Barbara, thank you, thank you! When you come to Buenos Aires, we can go photo-taking together…
Your pictures are so much more than what they show. Each viewer is allowed to make their own story/meaning for the image. That is a sign of a great image.
KC, I really appreciate your comment. The cemetery is such a multi-layered place, so it’s wonderful to think that my images capture that essence.
silky smoke..
Aja, gorgeous and also interesting. Where I saw water, you saw smoke. Put them together and all the elements are here: earth, air, water, fire and spirit.
Wow – this is lovely – really ethereal – I couldn’t even see the cherub first time round.
Thanks Andaleeb. Will post a blue-sky version some time, then you’ll see why I call this one Cherub UFO.
Wow, I like this even better than the last one. . though these images are a little haunting for an ex-Catholic.
Adriana, interesting to hear you find the images haunting. All this so wasn’t part of my upbringing, so I guess I come to it with a different eye.
