It is December, I know, but I have to show you my May queen, who I finally captured in all her green glory this afternoon. It is the first time she has rewarded me with a blog-worthy photo. Of course she may not be a May queen at all, but that is how I see her, with her virginal white robe sprinkled with flowers, rings on her fingers and rippling headdress topped with a starry crown. All in the colours of earth and trees, clouds and sky. She speaks of abundance and new growth – new life, I suppose, in the context of a cemetery window.
The stained glass is signed by A Estruch, who came to Buenos Aires from Barcelona a hundred years ago. He also created the window featured in my Jesus stopping the traffic. I keep happening upon his work in Recoleta Cemetery, and yesterday was photographing an exquisite pre-Raphaelite angel door at a local church when my eyes dropped to the bottom of the stained glass panel to see the name Estruch. I feel a bit of research coming on…
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
Simply beautiful Julie-Anne!
Fiona, thank you. She definitely inspired me. It’s lovely to think of you reading my blog in New York. Hope to see you again one of these days.
Love the way the reflection blends into the stone. Would like to see this glass from different angles and in different lights. It appears that it might be one of the best of the many great art pieces there.
Bob, glad you like the merging of the window with the stone of the reflected street. She is quite spectacular – and spectacularly pagan to my eye. Will take some ‘normal’ photos of her and email them to you! The colours are exquisite too.
Julie-Anne, I’m so glad you commented on Sally’s post of my photo on Facebook, because it led me to discover your blog! Your photos and stories are truly lovely. I’ll be back to read more!
Katie, so pleased to hear you like my blog. And I’ll be visiting yours again!
