“Is it good enough?” The nagging question is quick to surface.
I came home from Chacarita Cemetery yesterday with some 50 photos of reflections, but there wasn’t one that made me shout “Yes!” I’d got carried away at one mausoleum (nothing new there), contorting myself against the glass to create otherworldly effects. Or at least that was the idea.
I kept going back to this Angel vignette, though. I like how she rises out of the peeling paint, triumphant against the crackleglaze of time. The shadowy edge might have looked ‘better’ if it was more balanced, but that’s what happens when you poke your lens into the gaps of glass between the metal of the tomb doors.
One of my all-time favourite quotes is from Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles: “And it was the touch of the imperfect upon the would-be perfect that gave the sweetness, because it was that which gave the humanity.” It’s even on a scrap of paper, in my teenage handwriting, on my fridge. I need the reminder whenever I’m struggling with wanting things to be perfect.
I was born in Montreal in 1967, grew up in England and live between London and Buenos Aires. Like many, I came to Buenos Aires to dance tango and fell under the spell of this city where strangers talk to you, tango music seeps on to the streets and the ornate crumbling buildings speak of grander times. I love writing and crafting words – I've worked as a sub-editor for more than 20 years – and taking photographs.
Good enough … ??!! This is awesome!
I love the concept of triumph over death and decay. Marvellous, dear talented Julie-Anne.
Thank you so much, Barbara. I wasn’t being modest, I promise! Sometimes it’s hard, working in isolation, to judge whether a photo is “good enough”. But this one contained a message, so that was good enough for me. Sending love
